The Drawback of Striving for Perfection

The Drawback of Striving for Perfection

I was having a conversation with a buddy of mine who's building a software company, and he wanted some feedback and some advice on his sales process. Being a new company, he's not only the product developer, but he's also the top salesman. So I asked him how the sales process was going so far, and he said to me,Man, I love developing the product, I love building it, I love working on the back end, but I absolutely hate selling it.

I asked him why. His response to me was that, since he developed the back end of the software, he knows all the flaws, and he has negative self-talk that prevents him from selling it effectively.

So I said, Interesting. So you know that the product isn't perfect, and the solution you've built isn't perfect either. Therefore, you have a hard time selling it to other people. And he said, Yeah, pretty much.

I said, Let me ask you this. Do you have this same negative self-talk as a husband or as a father? He said, No, of course not. And so I asked him next, "Are you a perfect husband or a perfect father?" And he said again, No, of course not.

The point I was trying to make is that, even though he's not a perfect husband or father, and none of us are, he still shows up every day and does the best job he can in those roles. Just because something isn't perfect doesn't mean that it doesn't have value to the right person in the right situation.

The moral of the story is that even though we're always striving towards perfection, if we wait for it before we even get started, we're not going anywhere.
